Lightning McQueen (voice: Owen Wilson) race car is showing its age. The speed has dropped, the victories are no longer so regular and his competitors from back then are retiring in droves. In their place are new racing cars that are not only stylish and modern but also damn fast. First and foremost Jackson Storm (voice: Armie Hammer), who now wins the races in rows. Actually, Lightning should now recognize the signs of the times, but he doesn’t. Only when he has a terrible accident on the slopes does he seem to realize that his time is up.
His sponsors advise him to resign, but our red racer doesn’t want to accept that. That’s why he’s moving to Florida and putting himself in the hands of trainer Cruz Ramirez (voice: Cristella Alonzo), who is supposed to whip him into shape with all sorts of newfangled fuss. But no matter how hard Lightning McQueen trains, there is a lack of classic feeling and understanding of driving. In order to conquer youth once again, McQueen must dare to travel back in time to a bygone racing era in order to bring a classic to his side.
With Cars 3, the series around Lightning McQueen should now be left alone. The beautiful story, the somewhat surprising ending, and the excellent animation, as always, result in a film that fans of the series will watch anyway, and that ultimately even suits the older generation a little better.
