Synopsis

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a 2017 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team Guardians of the Galaxy, produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is the sequel to 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy and the 15th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film was written and directed by James Gunn and stars an ensemble cast including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, Sean Gunn, and Kurt Russell. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the Guardians travel throughout the cosmos as they help Peter Quill learn more about his true parentage.

In the year 2014, the planet Xandar is attacked by the Kree Empire. The Nova Corps, an intergalactic police force, repel the attack and apprehend Ronan the Accuser, a Kree radical. Nova Corps members Rhomann Dey and Garthan Saal escort Ronan to a Kree prison vessel. However, Ronan’s followers, Gamora and Nebula, attack the vessel and free him. They kill Saal and destroy the vessel, but Dey and the other prisoners escape in an escape pod.

Dey crash-lands on the remote planet Berhert, where he is rescued by the Guardians of the Galaxy, a group of criminals who were hired by the Nova Corps to protect Xandar. The Guardians consist of Peter Quill (a.k.a. Star-Lord), Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket, and Groot. Quill, Gamora, and Drax are captured by the Ravagers, a group of space pirates led by Yondu Udonta, Quill’s father figure. Rocket and Groot rescue them and bring them to the Ravagers’ ship.

The Ravagers take Quill, Gamora, and Drax to the planet Ego, where they meet Ego’s servant, Mantis. Ego reveals himself to be Quill’s father and explains that he is a Celestial, a god-like being. He says that he created the planet that the Guardians are currently on and that he wants Quill to help him expand his reach across the universe.

Meanwhile, Nebula escapes from the Ravagers and contacts the Kree. She tells them about Ego and Quill and asks for their help in destroying Ego. The Kree send a fleet of ships to Ego’s planet.

The Guardians battle the Kree, but they are outnumbered and outgunned. Ego reveals his true form and begins to destroy the planet. Quill realizes that Ego is only interested in himself and not in Quill or anyone else. Quill kills Ego, but not before Ego mortally wounds Yondu.

The Kree fleet is destroyed and the Guardians are victorious. Quill, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot mourn the loss of Yondu. They bury him on the planet and Quill finally accepts Gamora as his sister. The Guardians then set out into the cosmos to protect the galaxy from evil.
