Alexander Hamilton (Lin-Manuel Miranda) grew up in the Caribbean and lost his mother at an early age. It quickly became apparent that he had an extraordinary mind, so that he finally emigrated to New York in 1776. There he meets the ambitious Aaron Burr (Leslie Odom Jr.) and befriends the abolitionist John Laurens (Anthony Ramos), the Frenchman Lafayette (Daveed Diggs) and the tailor’s apprentice Hercules Mulligan (Okieriete Onaodowan). Together they put their hearts and souls into the revolution against the British. After marrying wealthy Elizabeth Schuyler (Philippa Soo), Hamilton goes to war alongside General George Washington (Christopher Jackson). In the decisive Battle of Yorktown, the Continental Army can finally defeat the British.
After the revolution, Hamilton, now a family man, returned to New York, began a career as a lawyer and wrote countless political essays. Eventually he was appointed Secretary of the Treasury by the newly elected President Washington. In the political tug of war over the next few years, as well as privately, he experiences victories and severe blows of fate. In doing so, he repeatedly clashes with the jealous Aaron Burr.
Hamilton does away with the male and white historiography and stages the life story of Alexander Hamilton with a multicultural cast and catchy hip-hop beats. Political debates as rap battles and unusual perspectives – author/main actor Lin-Manuel Miranda has succeeded in creating a brilliant stage spectacle with his award-winning musical, which has absolutely earned its status as a pop culture phenomenon, as the first act in particular knocks out one catchy tune after the other. An absolute must-see, not just for musical fans!
