With his very last strength, the Power Ranger Zordon (Bryan Cranston) can defeat his power-hungry adversary Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks), and bring the power coins to safety. Only 65 million years later, the small US town of Angel Grove is located in that place, where the power coins are looking for their new owners. Five extraordinary teenagers are to save the world as a team – the Power Rangers
.As long as the world is not in danger, the chosen ones-to-be go about their high school lives. Jason (Dacre Montgomery), the football team’s quarterback, has more than just problems with the police after a prank gone awry. In detention, he meets the gifted Billy (RJ Cyler) and cheerleader Kimberly (Naomi Scott). In a mine outside of town, they chance upon misfit Trini (Becky G) and daredevil Zack (Ludi Lin). Together they not only find mysterious light stones, but also an ancient spaceship.
Power Rangers is a product of its time, a shallow action blockbuster with dark overtones. The introduction of a new Power Rangers superhero team takes up a large part of the storyline. With the colorful action – including giant robots in the shape of dinosaurs, its humor, and the everyday problems of the young heroes, the film is aimed primarily at a younger audience. In the first half, the film benefits from having only three of teenagers in the foreground. Unfortunately, the classic action finale in the third act lacks penetrating power and spectacle.
