The youngest daughter of two medical students and one of the top students in her senior year, Justine begins her freshman year at veterinary school, following in the footsteps of her older sister Alexa. Like the other freshmen, Justine is subjected to an induction ritual from the seniors, which seals her affiliation with the veterinarians’ guild. The young woman puts up with everything, but when she has to eat a rabbit kidney and later has animal blood poured over her, the lifelong vegetarian is overcome with disgust. Encouraged by Alexa, she nevertheless goes along with it and endures this, as well as many other reprisals, because she doesn’t want to appear as an outsider. However, the ordeal does not go unnoticed by Justine, because shortly afterward a strange rash develops on her body, which her doctor dismisses as an allergic reaction.

But it’s not just Justine’s body that’s changing, because, at the same time as the rash appears, she’s always overcome by an inexplicable appetite for meat. What begins with minor thefts in the university canteen quickly turns into nocturnal binge eating, with her roommate Adrien accompanying her to the next snack bar or the next gas station. When Alexa has an accident and cuts off part of her finger, Justine learns that it’s not just animal flesh that satisfies her hunger.

In the horror genre, the type of cannibal has become a staple, an otherworldly monster consistently found only on the fringes of human society. Above all, this surprised the French director Julia Ducournau when she dealt with the subject as part of the research for her feature film debut Raw, because while other phenomena such as murder or incest in the stories of the genre are by no means relegated to these marginal areas of society, the ogre banished there. In Raw, Ducournau ties the theme to a young woman’s drama about accommodation and belonging, giving the work a certain special status within the cannibal horror subgenre.

Raw contains references to current debates, such as the discussion about eating animals. A telling dialogue sees Justine debunk the thought patterns of her fellow students who, despite their aspired professions, distinguish between certain ways of life. The repeated shots of animals, carcasses, or even the almost abnormal portions of meat in the canteen describe a kind of consumption cycle that is socially legitimate and that nobody thinks about.
