Legendary explorer Jaeger Clade (Dennis Quaid) and his son Searcher (Jake Gyllenhaal) are trying to discover a new area beyond the mountains of Avalonia. On this trip, however, Searcher realizes that he actually wants to be a farmer and not an explorer. So they part ways and Jaeger sets off alone to explore the foreign territory.
25 years after this incident, Searcher is happily living on his farm with his wife Meridian (Gabrielle Union) and son Ethan (Jaboukie Young-White), cultivating a life of zero adventure. But then the mayor of Avalonia shows up at his house and asks for his help on an important mission. However, things go wrong along the way, and Searcher not only has to fight dangerous creatures, but also has to question his beliefs.
Strange World takes elements from Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars, Inside Out, and Soul and then delivers about 100 minutes of average children’s entertainment. Unfortunately, there is nothing worthwhile for adults in Strange World. The voices of The Day After Tomorrow duo Dennis Quaid and Jake Gyllenhaal seem interchangeable and the story consists of too many plot conveniences.
