The Devil Made Me Do It is based on the trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson (played by Ruairi O’Connor), the first person in the United States to be charged with murder under the defense of demonic possession. In 1981, Johnson was charged with stabbing his landlord to death. His defense team, led by attorney Maurice “Mac” Smith (played by Patrick Wilson), claimed that Johnson was possessed by a demon at the time of the murder and was therefore not responsible for his actions. The trial made national headlines and was ultimately decided by a jury.
