Video trailer

HBO’s razor-sharp satire Succession explores greed and dysfunction at the rotten core of a Murdoch-esque media dynasty. Following the conniving Roy family as they vie for power, Succession provided riveting drama and dark comedy.

Brian Cox inhabits patriarch Logan Roy, an aging tycoon modeled on Rupert Murdoch. Logan plays his bickering children against each other for control of his Waystar Royco conglomerate as his health declines.

Cunning son Kendall, played by Jeremy Strong, aims to position himself as Logan’s successor. But his siblings Shiv, Roman, and Connor also crave power. Creators Jesse Armstrong and Adam McKay expose their petty competition mercilessly.

Succession wisely avoids taking clear sides in the sibling rivalries. While Logan is a cruel father, his children prove equally Machiavellian. Armstrong’s sharp writing humanizes the ambitious Roys somewhat without letting them off the hook.

Beyond the family, an elite ensemble cast shines as Waystar Royco executives and the Roys’ elite associates. Matthew Macfadyen is a particular standout as sycophantic executive Tom Wambsgans.

The abundant cynicism is balanced by genuine pathos as the Roys’ machinations expose their family’s deep dysfunctionality. Succeeding Logan comes at steep emotional costs.

Succession eschews traditional three-act structure for episodes, instead dropping viewers into chaotic ongoing power plays. Sweeping handheld camerawork adds to the sense of disorientation.

By centering the bad behavior of the hyper-wealthy elite, Succession touches cultural nerves in the 21st century starkly. But broad Shakespearean themes keep the gratuitous cruelty compelling.

After acclaimed early seasons, Succession captured the cultural zeitgeist fully by Season 3. HBO renewed it through Season 4, ensuring more backstabbing drama within the Roy empire lies ahead.
